The sixth event took place in the Italian town of San Cassiano, in the period 22 – 24 of January 2020. San Cassiano is a small village in the south-est of Italy, precisely on the heel of the peninsula’s boot, in the land known as Salento.
During the project, the delegations were supported by a local guide from the area, Mrs. Simona De Mitri, and by an interpreter, Prof. Anna De Donno, who explained everything that the delegations saw in the various movements. For the organization of the event, the Municipality relied on an event organization company, the "Anselmi Anselmo Mood", which provided support for the entire duration of the project. In the program for delegations, it was decided to make open workshops, putting the participants in contact with the problems of the territory for which an EU response is expected, problems, which are also similar to other countries part of the Project.
Reception of delegations at the Council Hall of the Municipality of San Cassiano with greetings from the authorities.
Presentation of the meeting program with debate on the topics covered. Lunch at the SVEG training body, based on typical products of the Salento tradition cooked by the students of the cooking course.
In the afternoon transfer to Otranto, with a visit to the monument commemorating the sinking of the "Kater i Rades", patrol boat loaded with Albanian migrants, wrecked in 1997. Visit to the historic center of the city and to the Cathedral, a symbolic monument that contains a synthesis of different architectural styles including Byzantine, early Christian and Romanesque elements.
Transfer to Lecce. Visit to the city, meeting point of the various Mediterranean, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Iberian and French cultures. Lunch at Caffè Alvino, a local restaurant in the city center, with finger food and single portions of local dishes.
In the afternoon, the provincial archaeological museum Sigismondo Castromediano was visited, also equipped with a small art gallery and a
lapidary.
It is the oldest museum in Puglia, founded in 1868 by Sigismondo Castromediano, duke of Cavallino; it preserves numerous testimonies of the Messapian civilization and of the Roman settlements. In the art gallery, located on the upper floor of the building, paintings are exhibited which document the Byzantine and Venetian influences on the work of local artists.
The morning was dedicated to visiting the small center of San Cassiano, the host country. Subsequently, the delegations moved to the public olive grove, within the Paduli Park, a vast expanse of olive groves in the center of Salento, affected for several years by the bacterium Xylella, one of the problems that seriously affected the Apulian and Italian economy, from which an EU response is expected.
The lunch was held in "Santo Solomo" by the "Abitare i paduli" association, an association that collaborates with the local administrations for the care and enhancement of the territory. Here the delegates had the opportunity to taste the Frisella, a typical dish of the peasant culture of the area, some varieties of dairy products and local cheeses.
